Test of embedding weather underground:

These webcams are located in the MGC club house. Wind speed is in knots. Time is  GMT, so to get the actual time, in summer, add one hour to the displayed time. Always check the date and time on the web cam images, to make sure they are current – both the static and the time lapse. On the static, the time and date can be correct, but the image old, because date and time come from the separate weather station, and are just added to the static images. On the time lapse, check the date and time in the bottom right. To force an update, do a hard refresh of the page – in Windows: ctrl + F5, on a Mac/Apple: Apple + R or command + R. If they are still giving incorrect info, please email webmaster@midlandgliding.club.

The detailed weather information is displayed below the webcam images.

Webcam and weather station at Sarn

This is provided courtesy of the Long Mynd Soaring Club, and looks towards Sarn, one of their north facing sites. The location it is looking at is here. The station is located close to there, and shows the sky to the WSW. Wind strengths etc. will be pretty accurate in in WNW – NE. It massively under-reads in an East or SE direction, but surprisingly tends to show the wind quite accurately as it runs down the hill behind when it is South to South West in direction.

Webcam and weather station at Clatter

This is provided courtesy of the Long Mynd Soaring club, and is located on their SW site at Clatter. Wind strengths etc. will be pretty accurate in a southerly wind, possibly slightly less so in other directions.

Other sources of weather information:

RASP (Regional Atmospheric Soaring Prediction) is one of the best resources. For an overview of the day go to ‘Spot Forecasts’,  where it says ‘BGA Turning Point’, and select MYN (hit the N key is the easiest way to find it). This will give you an overview of weather at the Mynd, including wind direction and strength, rain forecast and the ‘Star Rating’, which will give you an indication of how good the day is. NOTE: the usual location for RASP is no longer available. This is the backup page, which will be replaced once there is a new permanent location.

The BBC Weather Page is a good place to start for an overview.

Rain Today is good for predicting  when rain will arrive, or any clearances ahead.

XC Weather is a good site for predicting the wind strength and direction.

WeatherJack has links to all the weather websites, plus tutorials on how to read tephigrams etc.

Windyty is a mesmerising look at global weather patterns, but you can zoom in to see local weather.
